contraption |
I thought I would start my initial blog with the image I have chosen as profile and backgrounds for a couple of years. It is from my degree piece, which was a digital video installation called Contraption, and it is light. My desire was to create a light piece where I could change the nature of light, make it malleable and manipulate it like plastic or an odd solid.
I use this image on business cards and my website as it says so many things I wish convey about myself and my intentions in art.
It is an amorphous blob, abstract and yet identifiable, beautiful yet odd, definite yet open to interpretation.
I often make work which I hope is ambiguous in scale - I wish to refer to the universal as well as microscopic, really to reflect the human experience of having infinity within - the internal universe.
I also think alot about the interplay of moving and still images, and whether one can really capture time, what time is, and how we experience it. The delicious problems of Moving Image exist in these dilemmas.
I have been long fascinated in light and shade, and how placing one next to the other intensifies each - I think analogies between drawing and thought, illumination and depth, are possible.
I also wish to capture ethereal beauty, a suggestion which speaks as profoundly as any large scale work. I'd rather whisper in true colours than shout the obvious.
Unnatural nature, manipulated streams of light.
