Reflection on outcomes since last tutorial

First tutorial with Caroline. Discussed the case study task – I have chosen the organisation ArtAngel. Once an overview is established, an area will emerge for deeper research – I imagine that it may be about how they choose artists, or the production of artwork with an organisation. I’m also interested in their choices of place in non-traditional gallery settings. Caroline reminding to relate it to my art practice – I realise that I see ArtAngel as a microcosm of the “art world” – hoping for insight there. What parallels can be drawn between me and an international artist – similar process of choice and production – the question of scale empowering and hindering.  I am choosing a wide subject with many possibilities so that I can discover the area of depth, rather than choose in advance. Caroline is encouraging us to respond if appropriate in ways other than writing – additional to writing. Think I had hoped for/anticipated that. As long as the writing strongly has my voice and view.

Current projected aims and outcomes

Talked to Caroline about the big idea of setting up my works in conversation with each other – split screen, etc. Create randomness, conflicts, dialogues, tensions, etc. I have always been very interested in the thresholds between images – talked about my previous work “Consequences” using two slide projectors, where the viewer made the choices – actually I had directed much of these in ensuring each projector was loaded with types of images – eg. one side had more background, one more object, so I had anticipated and arranged the randomness. That type of control is very important for me to encompass. An idea to evolve over time.

I like more layer of interplay between my time based art, and the real time of showing/choosing what is shown by the viewer. Adds an element of interpretation to my work, like music which can only be played and interpreted by someone else other than the musician, and yet it remains their music.
Also talked about Artist/Moving Image Artist. I realise that by calling myself a moving image artist I may imply more of an ethos allied to video art, but actually come from fine art. I want to practice this communication/shorthand to be clear.
