Towards a definition of studio documentation: working tool and transparent record

(Visual Enquiries 1 The Reflective Practitioner)

A study of a reflective set of interviews with art and design postgraduate students, examining variations in approach of documenting their studio practice. Methodology in this can both provide a useful archive for the artist to show research and reflection in their work, and also enhance studio practice by allowing the artist an archive of their thoughts and processes which in turn informs current and future thinking.

The artists are influenced in their choice of documentation especially in previous graduate study, and although there is initial confusion in organisation and compartmentalising of concepts, aspects and materials which do not separate well, they generally find the process beneficial, even if they do not always recognise the process.

Documenting practice may be a creative act, but it sits outside the creative practice, functioning as a network which links things together for the artist, and allowing them better to communicate and understand the connections between theory, intuition and intent, further deepening each, and resulting in a more robust practice.

Exegesis - a critical explanation or interpretation of a text.

Phenomenographic - a research approach which examines the relationships between study and understanding, thinking and learning, especially within education. It explores how people experience and learn.

Reflection

Already near the beginning of the MA I can see the effect of such formalised documentation in my thinking through the blog research journal, making connections, and not allowing strands of understanding to slip by.

I also recognise the initial confusion in organisation mentioned, but this is a task I have always liked - to organise information according to how I think about it and can understand it.
