MA Tutorial Report 6

Date:     11th July 2011                                    Tutor:  Emma Bulley

Reflection on outcomes since last tutorial

Discussed recent projects, Mapping the Territory and Case Study. I had referred Emma to visual exercise Random, which is a controlled experiment in allowing a bit more accident and randomness in my work. Not a big exercise, but related to other works and ideas.

Also discussed the fruitfulness of being involved in all that outsider art through case study. I’m not yet sure how that will directly affect my work, although I know it will. I liked the random crammed salon hang, and would like to show my work like this sometime.

Talked through current ideas on breaking the boundaries project. More to come.

Current projected aims and outcomes

The mapping project, Paradigm, has been very fruitful in terms of using framed glass – I will use these again in various formats. Emma commented in immediacy of result, more personal and less polished than previous work. That may be, but actually I would in preference move this project on further, and refine its aesthetics, as an idea though, it is useable, and I would exhibit it now as a workable interactive piece. Talked of all the different ways in for a viewer – I realised that although I usually think of that and offer a way in, through title and writing, etc, it is my one way in – the unfinished elements of Paradigm allows the viewer to be pulled in more, offers more ways in. Its unfinishedness and uncertainty is part of what it is. Thinking of this multiplicity of approach to my work in general – a very useful thought to consider to other work, and how I present videos in the future. It shows research as practice, and practice as research. I quite like this idea of the audience finishing and filling in.

Discussion and recommendations

Thinking about how projects, MA, work, etc, begin to overlap alot more.  Another form of multiplicity. I am considering the elements of randomness and control, the various entry points for the viewer, and the viewer experience. I know changes from the MA are filtering through to general thinking and approach.

There are further plans for the frames – even taking more photos as it is – the black and clear hand is especially effective, and it’s amazing the change it creates – more than can be expected.

Emma’s email response to this report:

“I think you could say something about the discussion we had on critical informed and reflective art versus personal outsiders art as it appears that you're trying to find a middle way between those things.”

Reflection:

Yes, we did discuss these things in relation to my recent involvement with the Koestler Trust in the case study, and the preinstructional and outsiders art encountered there. Although I agree this interests me in some ways, I am as yet unsure how it will filter through in real ways into my practice. I am not trying to find a middle way. Although I would aim for my art to be approachable by all, Emma and I do not always agree on what is the most effective areas of my practice. She seems to favour and get more from more hands on immediacy in my work, whereas I do not see my other moving image pieces as remote or cool. I feel that highly subjective and perhaps refined is what I try to attain, and I want my art to look and feel a particular way – perhaps unmistakeable as art, a definition of my vision or ideas.

Emma is right in that we did discuss this, but I felt I was getting a little lost in the conversation, and was unsure of what I wanted to say about this, or what I want to explore here as yet. I feel it is something brewing behind the scenes.
