Reflection on outcomes since last tutorial

Tutorial about draft artist statement. What audience – I imagine it is if I showed current work or work in progress in an exhibition of MA students – Caroline suggested making that clear with an introduction to statement – mention studying and exploratory nature, to clarify.

When revising, add access points for readers – explicit hooks, factual descriptions, etc – this is what the work is and is about, and what is being tested, what ideas revolving around. Grab attention.

Current projected aims and outcomes

It’s a fair question – why must the drawing become moving image, especially as I am finding it hard to get into the project – why can’t the drawings be as they are. Somehow the answer is that it is because I already decided that from the beginning. The drawings must necessarily make a leap to become moving image – they are not just scanned and linked drawings – but it is my search for meaning, and the interruption of my usual process, which is making me falter. I feel this is a really valuable process, to deconstruct my practice, and although it feels a little frustrating, I also know that it is constructive in the long run. I think the drawings do stand as they are, but I always wanted to transform them also. I have a belief that I must do as I intended – I must solve the equation and find a way to make a meaningful piece of moving image from the drawings. I am observing myself. What I will also present is writing about the transition, the work in progress, the difficulties.

Caroline reminded that I already have a body of work for the assessment – the drawings, and that the moving image piece does not necessarily need to be finished. Good to know, but I feel that as soon as I get more of a handle to the moving image, I will pursue it. I am working on it anyway – I’m not used to working without feeling driven.

Discussion and recommendations

Be more specific about references – music, novels etc. Name names, ideas.
In statements – no I aim, I hope, etc – be the authority of own work.

Reflection

I mentioned somehow including all the reviewing I do as part of my work, as it is really integral to my artistic activity – perhaps in the future, include that as part of my core activity – reviewing own work, and making a project of that.
