Reflection on outcomes since last tutorial

Discussed shaping projects and disciplines around what actually happens – eg drawing 5 days out of 7, rather than vowing to draw every day and failing although still producing.

As well as picking up a list of things still to be done while rereading past MA notes and tutorials, I expect to trace discoveries and reinforce things I realise I have picked up along the way, and to realise further aspects. I feel I’ve made quite a turn around when it comes to research – it’s not all just in my own head any more and implied in the work – I can trace it and show it, and I intend to extend that practice this year. In the reflections I am looking for more strategies to apply.

Current projected aims and outcomes

The new Reflective Practice project is all about emphasising reflection, or even over emphasising, to create material for the end, and to embed habits, strategies and attitudes. Therefore, a repetitive mechanism or equation for reflection would be useful for me so that my reflection doesn’t get distracting – so easy to lead off into interesting new areas, but not do the job. So using one of the simple reflective models throughout would be efficient and effective – and would work no matter what project I apply to it – I do like universal solutions!

I am going to work through this unit by making work, starting with the particular sound piece 24 Hour Sibelius – lots to write about there – the emotional content of musical transitions is maintained even when manipulated and stretched out in time. Also about to give myself another drawing project – finite, but with different rules from before. Looking back through the MA, I am convinced that the right ideas will emerge for that.

Discussion and recommendations

I will add to my reflective review and study plan my chosen reflective mechanism –probably a straightforward Kohl model, but I still have to research these a bit and adapt something which works best for me. I see it as a reflective equation.

I also intend to  blog my working process and progress as I go along, starting with the 24 Hour Sibelius project – more as a reflective exercise, and also a way of signposting research points.

Reflection

I liked Angela’s suggestion of looking back over different work done in MA, and progressing that, so that instead of interesting sidelines which contribute indirectly, I draw upon them directly for further MA projects. Work such as the tin cans, various photographic projects, material videos, etc. I am happier and more productive having a big puzzle to solve, and resolving all these strands of work further.
