Cubitt Gallery Drawing Collective 2

Another Cubitt Gallery Drawing Collective event. Islington Museum. Six Mix exhibition, April 2013.

Not exactly seamlessly organised. At an earlier rather inconclusive meeting with the organiser, me and another artist came up with ideas galore, and there were some from others who were meant to turn up on the day but didn't. Luckily here's one I prepared earlier:
I devised two workshop activities and also brought theLongLine, which once again made a splash and gathered some beautiful contributions, and the first collaged contribution.

Workshops -
Draw Yourself as a Victorian Londoner. With images and information I had gathered for inspiration, a box of dressing up clothes from the museum and a mirror. There are always some children, especially girls, who just like to sit and draw, to dress up and imagine.

Drawing a Perfect Circle
I had written a little piece about Giotto Drawing the Perfect Circle, and presented it as a challenge. With coloured square origami paper and felt pens, the contributions on the wall formed an interesting sub-gallery. People are generally much better than this than you might imagine!

There was also a floor-based spirograph activity and a wall-based pulley drawing thing.

Again the issue of paying artists. Although this is a voluntary event, with CV-type benefits for the artists, but we are all professional people with degrees and lives. Initially, the organiser wanted a full day event, but was persuaded that a full working day was unnecessary. She also told up not to spend too much time and expense on preparation, but clearly, as we know, either you spend the time in preparing something simple that can practically run itself, or you just have some open drawing room with paper and materials available as a free for all. I did spend the time in preparing my workshops, and just as well, as I could set all three up and oversee them all. And the budget. There is a budget for paper, but not the artists. Not even travel expenses. Again, it's voluntary and I'm pleased to do it, but everyone else gets paid except for the artists.
