Non narrative is a tern I have used myself, to varying effect.
During my degree I watched some videos of Stan Brakhage's work, and other experimental film makers. I've seen Brakhage also in exhibition, some scratched film roll all laid out in a long frame - I don't recall exactly where.
The General Post Office had a film making unit which at times supported some innovative and experimental film and animation. I often wonder if there is still a great archive somewhere still undiscovered.

These experimental and hands-on film makers certainly opened up the ideas of moving image for me at a time when I was using photography, spending time in dark rooms and experimenting with the stuff of film itself. Although now I mainly used digital media, I still retain that hands-on approach, manipulating images outside of the computer, and then feeding back in. Artists like Brakhage exemplify that anything is possible in film / moving image / film, and that there are no laws and rules.
Stan Brakhage works
Invention, aesthetic sense and exploration, using actual layers.
