Alex Pearl

Alex Pearl is a UK artist who works across media, often using video and installation. He tends to make things which he then records before they fall apart, so there is a sense of the ephemeral about his work, and, as he says, failure and disappointment. He aims for a light touch, and passing ideas. He makes work freely available for reworking and criticism on sites such as YouTube, consistent with his use of contemporary materials and media.

In researching his work I found it diverse and not easy to sum up – his exploration does not have much of a common thread – not that it must, but projects sometimes mismatch his artistic statement – “Throughout his work there is a sense of an acceptance of failure or disappointment as important parts of the human condition”. More often – “The work displays playfulness with its own limitations and a hopeless desire for greatness”. I remember his dissolving asprin face film from some time ago - a successful small idea. At times humorous and ungraspable, there is a strong sense of aesthetic in his work, and also the feel of someone moving quickly through a host of ideas.
