Fischli and Weiss

Swiss artist duo, Peter Fischli and David Weiss have been collaborating since the late ‘70’s. Their best known work is the film "Der Lauf der Dinge (The Way Things Go)" 1987, documenting mechanical chain reactions in a studio set-up of mechanics and contraptions. They work across media. Precariously balanced household objects are documented in “Quiet Afternoon” 1984-5.

I had the video of The Way Things Go when my son was little – he and his friends were mesmerised and entertained by the collisions. That sense of wonderment is not lost with growing up – such work fascinates at all levels, inducing thoughts about the chaotic nature of the universe, or the joy of mad artistic experiments for their own sake.
