Homage to the Half -Truth

Visual Enquiry. From Archive to Interview.

Art criticism and writing about art - a permanent record of a train of thought or a theoretical position.

A definition of what art criticism may be, with examples of how not to do it. I found her tales of Louise Bourgeois exemplifying how art criticism could not do her justice actually was a perfect example of how to do it - a successful personal style which was not laden with academic writing, just as advised in the article.

Whose side are critics on, artist or audience.

Homage to the Half -Truth in Morgan, S. (1996) What the Butler Saw: Selected Writings by Stuart Morgan. London. Durian.

Reflection

I liked this piece of writing. I'm interested in the area of art criticism and writing, having an involvement. some of the ideas do not completely coincide with my own definitions of what art criticism, reviewing or assessment might be, but I agree that it is somewhere about finding insight in the work - perhaps getting it, whilst acknowledging there are other ways to get it.

Louise Bourgois sounds like she was a fascinating and naughty person. How lovely it would have been to know her well like that. What an idea to fictionalise one's life - I know some people do that, but most of us are compelled to (selective) honesty.
