Group Seminar Don't Look Back

17th September 2012

Lecture Dadaism and Surrealism - Don't look Back
This is not a drawing.
We look back during and after.
We tend to jump to conclusions about Surrealism and Dadaism - they are overdone at school level, but are more subtle and complex.
Ideologies behind the use of objects.
Authority of idea is the power of the piece.
Now a truly postmodern practice - everything is available.
We can sit anywhere we like on scale of maker - readymade.
In history they didn't contextualise!
How are artists judged - skill, idea, context, impact, funding.
Is the value innovation, or appearing to be new.
Making becomes the subject.
Parallel line of enquiry manifesting in different ways.
Imaginary / real.
Readjustment today - the intelligence of audience.
Objects - function - layers of reality.
Plinthing - Phillida Barlowe.
Layers of reality and imagined - all is an imagined reality.
Postmodernism - pick up favourite ideas - create own artistic and philosophical manifesto from favoured ideas. Making up own religion / art - cherry picking.
Definition of art as having no function?
the function / purpose / impact of art.
Surface functions like a communication tool, or disrupts the thinking process.
Reinvention while looking back.
Currency in values. current / available to everyone.
Ged Quinn artist - landscapes. Auschwitz.

Reflection

Ceci n'est pas un bouteille - Vessels.
I want to explore and define how I see the ready made.

I always try to process my notes for seminars, etc, before too long, so that I can grasp and summarise ideas and notes. I didn't realise that I had neglected to fill in this one, so the notes are still in note form. I can remember the conversations when I read through the notes, but admit to have rather let this one slip though my fingers.
