Issues of Scale

Now I have come to the stage of deciding the sizes of the printed still and the projection. The original school photos are all rather small, and the Found Paintings, being digital images, were always the size of my computer screen. I've been thinking about issues of scale and size for some time in planning, and have come up with no reason to alter the nature of the images.

There is a literal element to size. I have been planning the projection as smaller than the regular screen, and I don't want the framed stills to dominate. It's still more of an individual experience to be in front of each image.

At another time, another place, another gallery and installation, I would possibly consider scaling the projection or the stills up, and in fact, I would love to see that. But part of the point of my MA installation is to show the multiplicity of installation configurations - it could be different stills, different framing solutions, different arrangements. There are practical considerations about the size of my gallery in Bank Street.

Ideas about scale are interesting concepts to consider and reimagine work. I have all along felt that the scale of Embedded should reflect the small to intimate scale of the original photographic material. On a practical level, all the elements had to fit into the gallery at Bank Street, and also be makable by me and transportable. Any idea of altering the scale seemed unnecessary and not adding any value. Yet again, at another time and in another place, I would imagine such projects and installations as Embedded could include some choice alterations in scale - imagining the stills large would be marvellous - perhaps Embedded is an ongoing project after all that I could constantly make slightly differently - in fact, I think the multiplicity of the installation highly suggests that.
