Artists Seeking Representation. Susan Mumford

Attended a talk at the Fiumano Gallery, London, 27th February 2012, held by The Be Smart About Art Academy, about Artists Seeking Gallery Representation, given by Susan Mumford.

Very interesting clear information with some of the usual facts about etiquette, and the basic truth about showing, showing, showing work and proper follow through, being professional, and above all prepared.

Susan quoted a recent survey of gallerists and agents, reference unavailable, which stated that 30% of galleries wanted to keep only the artists they already had, 35% wanted to decrease the number of artists they were representing, and 35% were open to the possibility of representing new artists.

The gist of the evening was really to make everything as easy and straightforward for the gallerist by doing all the right things:
being professional
keep website up to date
network
exhibition exposure
keep CV up to date
being considerate of gallerists time
Additionally:
be open minded about accepting commissions
share marketing costs
prepare stock list
keep communication open
avoid burning bridges

There were cautionary tales of relationship breakdowns between artists and gallerists, usually caused by unrealistic expectations and lack of communication, and reminders that the gallery world is very small, and that  working with a gallery is 50% about the relationship, and should be seen as a collaboration.

It's a long game, like art practice itself.
