Introduction to Studio Practice

Lecture
Emma Bulley
21st May 2012

In the beginning there are many possibilities, in the expert's mind there are few.

I have been a selfish being all my life, in practice, though not in principle. Jane Austin. Pride and Prejudice.

Cultivating an open beginners mind. - Zen Buddhism.
Doing things well without being too goal orientated.
Paul Klee - taking a line for a walk.
How can I take this object/idea on a journey.
what is my relationship to my studio.
Bring things/finds back to the cave/studio.
Studio is where to work/think/play.
Collecting provides structure and framework -
develops critical thinking as repeated and consistent actions develops choices.
Provides framework for open-ended practice.
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi - psychology of optimal experience - flow.
People are most happy when they are in a state of flow.
A state of concentration or complete absorption, focussed attention.
The balance between challenge/skill.
Conceptual methods, processes, media.

What do you mean by artistic practice?

How broad is your own practice?

Reflection

Emma, and other artists, develop the language and references to describe their own practice to indicate where they are coming from. Often we ask the same questions, and question the same things. But the answers are always different.
