Anatomy of a Project

13. 18th July 2011

Caroline Wright. Professional Context. Synchronous Seminar

This synchronous seminar went better from a technical point of view from any previous, although still somewhat inefficient in accessing some documentation. Analysing projects and opportunities, it was interesting and valuable to consider each listing more deeply, to weigh up the pros and cons, and to choose what to submit work to using more criteria other than if it is possible or not.

The debates about opportunities range from listing sites and accessing the information, to researching the credibility of organisations.

Reflection

I regularly trawl the listings sites for opportunities to show work, but often feel a little disorganised about it, no matter how methodical I aim to be. It takes rigorous systems to look through everything efficiently, to takes notes of current opportunities and deadlines, and to investigate them more fully. Listings sites have repetitions, and also format differently.

However, I think that's just the way it is, especially if one is looking for all sorts of opportunities to teach, to write, to earn, as well as showing work. I think over the last few years I have learned much about what to submit work to, and how. I am still refining my system of looking through sites, and have my favourites.

Recent really good site I found is:

isendyouthis.com

In a way, spending the last few years figuring out how the art world works to some extent has helped me make some progress in negotiating it, in showing work and knowing what I want, but on the other hand, I think it makes a person more aware of what they can't do rather than what they can. The art world certainly works in a certain way, and one can make progress, but it also thrives on those who do not know what they cannot do. In a way, one can know too much. You can't just walk in with bravado if you are too aware of having the right CV or exhibition experience and so on.
