Reflection on outcomes since last tutorial

Discussed upcoming essay project. I am thinking along the lines of “Moving Image – but is it Art”, discussing the fact that Moving Image even amongst artists is a term often confused with areas such as experimental video, filmic and cinematic concerns and documentation of performance. My take on Moving Image comes much more from photography, and particularly early 20th century surrealist photography. I will add in the mix the artistic perception of photography as art, which had caught up somewhat, through video art, and that the debate is currently new technology, internet-based art. Moving back to Moving Image, the definitions are still movable and makeable. The art worth, in terms of art institutions, and also the art market, of Moving Image, I think suffers a bit from this lack of definition. The exciting thing about being part of this is that I can create these definitions around myself and my practice, in how I show work and any projects I set up to promote and define what I think of as Moving Image.

An interesting challenge to think of this essay as more personable than academic writing, to imagine it placed in a magazine, etc. It’s a great chance of developing a readable and well informed and referenced writing style, in contrast to all pervasive off-putting art stuff out there.

Current projected aims and outcomes

OCA issues – clarity in briefs and understandings as the course evolves. It’s rather difficult to pinpoint such difficulties, as although there are areas I can be aware that I don’t understand, and seek clarification about, it’s the unintended loopholes that I am not aware of until it has all passed.
Ongoing. Send email of issues to discuss. Try to summarise.

Discussion and recommendations

Discussed a bit about July assessment. Mentioned how I felt misinterpreted or mischaracterised by Emma, and that the areas we end up talking about are not my real interests. Although I took the internship at the Koestler Trust, outsider art is not at the centre of my concerns. Also, I disagree that frames project was more raw and powerful that more controlled moving image – it does not mean that much to me, and does not nearly get to my intentions. Agreed this is an interesting condition rather than any clash. I know from experience how valuable misinterpretation can be in progress and defining myself, but still, it’s something that probably needs clarification before too long.

It’s good to know that blog seems okay, but really, it works for me, it’s a great focus for everything going on, and I doubt if I could do it much differently anyway.
