The Upcoming

Although I have said that I am not looking to take up yet more unpaid work, amongst recent applications for opportunities, something really interesting and worthwhile came up. The Upcoming is a website with news, features, lifestyle and culture. In a more long-term plan for continuing writing and reviewing art and culture, I have been given the chance to write for them.

It's good timing for me, and I can nip in to events now that the family is much more self sufficient, and most of my other activities are flexible. It's a great chance to build up reviewing in fields wider than previously, and to develop a readable style for the generally informed audience. Already I have reviewed exhibitions, theatre, film, and tomorrow music also.

It's challenging to respond almost immediately, to trust initial thoughts and get copy in as quickly as possible. I really like the process of reading the art or event, understanding it, and translating it into points I'd like to make. I seem to try to relate the particular thing to the wider media or context.
